Russia’s Foreign Ministry urged Iran and Israel to exercise restraint and prevent any further escalation of tensions in the region. The statement was issued on Sunday in response to Tehran’s drone and missile attacks on Israel over the weekend.
The strikes were retaliatory actions following a suspected Israeli airstrike on Iran’s consulate in Damascus earlier in the month, which resulted in the deaths of several high-ranking Iranian officers, including two generals. Tehran attributed the attack to Israel, although Israel has not explicitly acknowledged its involvement. However, Defense Minister Yoav Gallant indirectly suggested Israel’s responsibility by stating that Israel “strikes our enemies across the Middle East.”
Expressing deep concern over another perilous escalation in the region, the Russian Foreign Ministry emphasized that crises in the Middle East, especially the ongoing Palestinian-Israeli conflict, are often exacerbated by irresponsible provocative actions, leading to heightened tensions.
The ministry called on all involved parties to exercise restraint and urged regional states to address existing issues through political and diplomatic channels.
